Our Executive Director Patricia Lozano shares with KWHY-TV about the many immediate and long-term benefits of bilingualism for young children, tips for supporting Dual Language Learner (DLL) children in developing their home language, and information about Quality Start Los Angeles’s DLL Initiative.
“It is important for parents to understand the benefit of being bilingual and speaking the [home] language at home. So if we speak in Spanish, speak Spanish at home so that the children have that aptitude and we know that speaking two languages is better than one. What parents have to do is ask where these schools are that offer bilingual programs.”
“Es importante que los padres comprendan el beneficio de ser bilingüe y hablar el idioma [del hogar] en casa. Entonces hablamos en español si en casa es español para que los niños tengan esa aptitud y sabemos que hablar dos idiomas es mejor que uno. Lo que tienen que hacer los padres es preguntar dónde están estas escuelas que ofrecen programas bilingües.”
