Video Series: Student Parent Experiences

October 16, 2025

In this videos series, Early Edge spotlights the experiences of three California-based student parents pursuing higher education. Watch the videos below:

Meet Yoanna, a parent of a 4-year-old child, pursuing her degree in Biology at Cal Poly Pomona. She found support as a student parent through the Parenting Student Support Team, an on-campus initiative that has helped her in balancing life as a student and parent. In this video, she shares about the critical need for higher-ed campuses to be able to identify and support student parents.

Meet Selma, a parent of a 4-year-old child, pursuing her degree in Natural Sciences and AA-T in Child & Adolescent Development at Pasadena City College. In this video, she shares about her experience with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), highlighting how it currently overlooks key information about student parents like her. Collecting this data could help campuses better connect student parents with critical resources, funding, and support services such as child care.

Meet Miriam, a parent of a 2-year-old child, pursuing her Masters in Urban and Regional Planning at UCLA. In this video, she highlights the critical value of supporting student parents and their kids—our next generation.

Note: Clips were taken from the “Supporting Student Parents and their Young Children in California’s Institutions of Higher Education” webinar.
