Early Edge Presents at the Student Parents Summit and Joins the California Alliance for Student Parent Success
During National Student Parent Month in September, members of the Early Edge California team including our Executive Director, Patricia Lozano, and Policy Analyst, Andrew Avila, attended and presented at the 2024 Forging Equitable Futures for Student Parents Summit hosted by Michelson 20MM Foundation and the California Alliance for Student Parent Success.
The two-day summit (September 5-6, 2024) took place at the LA Trade Tech College in Los Angeles, CA and brought together practitioners, faculty members, student parents, and leaders from across the state to work together to delve into innovative strategies, inclusive policies, and community-based initiatives designed to enhance Student Parent success.
The summit kicked off with the CSU Student Parent Monthly Convening, where Patrica presented with Larissa Mercado-López, Professor and Department Chair of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Fresno State, about Collectively Imagining Expanded Child Care for Student Parents to student parent advocates from California State University.
On the final day of the summit, Patricia and Andrew presented, Supporting Student Parents by Bridging Early Childhood Education and Higher Education, including guest speakers Dr. Giselle Navarro-Cruz from Cal Poly Pomona and Ishia Orozco-Barajas from UCLA to share the higher education perspective. In their presentation, they covered what we know about student parents, the challenges and needs of student parents of infants and toddlers, and integrating Early Childhood Education considerations.
We were also excited to share our participation in the newly formed California Alliance for Student Parent Success administered by California Competes and EdTrust-West! Thank you to Michelson 20MM Foundation and The California Alliance for Student Parent Success for the invitation.
