EdWeek reporter Caitlynn Peetz Stephens spoke with Early Edge Director of Policy Carolyne Crolotte about the reasons the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) assessment was removed from use for TK students through the passage of Early Edge co-sponsored bill AB 2268 (Muratsuchi). California will be piloting two new screeners that use playful games and stories to test 4-year-olds’ language skills.

“We’re excited that things are moving in the right direction in terms of implementing a better system that supports children’s needs in a developmentally appropriate way and while also supporting their social-emotional development,” said Carolyne Crolotte, the director of policy at Early Edge California, a nonprofit advocacy organization that supported the exemption.
