Early Edge California is deeply concerned by the newly proposed federal rule that would dismantle the national Head Start standards and harm our most vulnerable children and their families.

For nearly sixty years, Head Start has guaranteed that children receive high-quality early learning, and comprehensive health and developmental services. By rolling back these national standards and deferring to a patchwork of state requirements, the proposal risks creating deep inequities in the quality of care and services children receive. These proposed changes are part of a larger effort to dismantle the Head Start program.

The proposed rule would: 

California’s educators and programs are deeply committed to high-quality early learning. However, national standards exist so that every child, in every community is guaranteed the same strong start.

Early Edge remains committed to advocating on behalf of children and families, for whom access to programs like Head Start is critical to economic stability and to ensuring children have high-quality early learning opportunities.

What You Can Do

We urge you to make your voice heard during the public comment period by submitting a public comment at regulations.gov by October 6, 2026 (docket ACF-2026-0595, RIN 0970-AD30) and by calling and writing to your members of Congress. In the coming days, we will share templates and resources to make submitting your public comment quick and easy. Children and families are counting on us.
