SB 271 Sample Support Letter

Below is a sample support letter for SB 271.

Instructions: Please send all letters via email to Nichole Murillo, Office of Governor Gavin Newsom, at [email protected]. In addition, please CC: [email protected].

[Date]

The Honorable Gavin Newsom
Governor, State of California
1020 O Street, Suite 9000
Sacramento, CA 95814

SB 271 (Gómez Reyes)
SUPPORT

Dear Governor Newsom,

[Name of Your Organization] is proud to support Senate Bill (SB) 271, which will ensure the more than 400,000 student parents who are juggling the demands of raising children while pursuing higher education at California’s public institutions, receive critical supports and services that will strengthen their ability to achieve their postsecondary goals.

In recent years, California has made meaningful strides to support the growing number of student parents, recognizing the additional barriers they face to access and complete postsecondary education. However, significant challenges remain. Access to and knowledge of resources is a persistent challenge. Additionally, for many student parents, access to affordable childcare is one of the most crucial needs that frequently is not met.

SB 271 will ensure that student parents are informed of the childcare services, resources and programs that exist both on their campus and in their community and have assistance to access them. SB 271 will require basic needs centers to coordinate with their local Resource and Referral agency, inform student parents they may be eligible for subsidized childcare, how they can get assistance to apply for subsidies, and find child care service providers. Additionally, the bill will require the basic needs center, financial aid office, and if applicable the child development center, to inform student parents seeking support, of the full scope of services available on and near their campus.

Supporting student parents to succeed in higher education fosters economic mobility and well-being for both parents and children in a two generational approach. SB 271 will ensure student parents get the support and access to services they critically need to attain their educational goal and create a better life for themselves and their children. For these reasons, [Name of Your Organization] urges you to SIGN SB 271.

Respectfully,
