First 5 CA DLL Pilot Study: Challenges in Assessing California’s Diverse Dual Language Learners
First 5 California’s DLL Pilot Study Releases New Research Brief
As part of its DLL Pilot Study, First 5 California has released Challenges in Assessing California’s Diverse Dual Language Learners, a new brief by the American Institutes for Research (AIR) discussing lessons learned from assessments conducted with young children across the state from diverse language backgrounds. The practice of assessing DLLs primarily in English may not accurately reflect their learning; meanwhile, the availability and appropriateness of assessments in home languages is limited, especially for DLLs with home languages other than Spanish. The brief provides recommendations for researchers as well as ideas about how to improve multilingual assessments in the future.
