Position Overview

Early Edge California is currently seeking a Senior Policy Advisor with strong relationships in Sacramento to play a key role in establishing and executing Early Edge’s policy priorities, specifically in Early Childhood Education workforce development and Dual Language Learners. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Executive Director and senior policy team to make a difference in the lives of children by affecting policy and practice change. We are seeking someone who is passionately committed to early education, able to think strategically and act pragmatically, and who is ready to serve as one of the organization’s key advocates and spokespeople in Sacramento.

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with California statewide and local policymakers, as well as legislative champions
  • Work with and develop coalition partners from across the political spectrum
  • Support the Early Edge team on developing and implementing a policy agenda for the Early Learning workforce and Dual Language Learners
  • Provide deep policy expertise and bring broad networks to the work of Early Edge
  • Respond promptly and strategically to new legislation and media requests for information or comments
  • Track and analyze legislation affecting early education in California and nationally and make recommended bill and policy positions to the Executive Director
  • Organize briefings and other events that educate lawmakers, the public, and the media about early education in California and represent Early Edge before the legislature
  • Support the executive team and staff in developing and implementing effective legislative, administrative and political strategies and advocacy campaigns
  • Serve as policy resource and thought leader in the field
  • Research issues and draft testimony, presentations, policy briefs, reports, research memos, fact sheets and other supportive materials that clearly and concisely describe complex policy options to policymakers and practitioners


  • Extensive experience in advocacy or policy roles in California
  • Strong legislative network and connections in Sacramento
  • Strong background in policy analysis and development
  • In-depth content knowledge of Early Childhood Education in higher education, training and professional development systems and Dual Language Learners
  • Understanding of state, federal and local policymaking and the role of advocacy in advancing a policy agenda
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects; work with high-level state policymakers in a variety of settings; and respond effectively to their needs for information and technical assistance
  • Strong communications skills, including speaking, presenting, writing, listening and ability to concisely distill and present complex information
  • Strong program development and evaluation experience
  • Ability to prioritize based on organizational strategies and manage multiple deadlines
  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree preferred
  • Based in the Sacramento, San Francisco, or Los Angeles area
