Position Overview

Early Edge California is seeking a talented individual to join our communications team to assist with shaping and executing EECA’s communications activities in support of our policy and advocacy agenda. This is a great opportunity for a communications professional  with a deep commitment to early care and education issues who is interested in taking on the challenge of improving the early learning system in California. The Communications Associate will execute communications plans, draft messaging, develop relationships with media outlets that reach key audiences, pitch reporters and secure coverage, manage organization’s social media presence, support event execution, and complete administrative tasks as assigned, with a focus on high-quality early learning programs, early learning workforce development, and Dual Language Learners.

Job Responsibilities: The Communications Associate will:

  • Draft press releases, blog posts, statements, advisories, op-ed pieces, memos, briefings, message guidance, fact sheets, infographics and other material that support media relations efforts
  • Oversee publication of monthly newsletter
  • Coordinate earned media opportunities through the development of strategic messaging and prompt scheduling to support internal spokespeople
  • Work with staff to maintain the communications calendar of priority events, upcoming programs, and milestones
  • Create and implement a broad social media engagement strategy in support of EECA’s mission
  • Manage the day-to-day distribution of information through website platform and social media outlets
  • Work with Communications Director on creation of  all web content to ensure accuracy; identify, evaluate, and solve website problems; test web pages for functionality; update links as needed
  • Translate policy materials into user-friendly  content for distribution across all communications  channels, including web, newsletter, social media, etc. Execute the design of printed materials, including brochures, flyers, and other items as needed
  • Participate in the development of video stories that support EECA’s priority areas.
  • Work on other projects or assignments as needed

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Excellent communication and writing skills as well as an ability to write and edit proficiently and quickly
  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of Early Edge California
  • Bachelor’s degree or related experience required
  • 3+ years experience working in a communications or media related field, preferably working directly with media outlets and reporters
  • Knowledge of key media targets and an understanding of news media
  • Ability to use technical communications tools, such as content management systems, Photoshop or Canva, and HTML
  • Ability to meet deadlines and effectively handle a variety of time-sensitive tasks and competing priorities with minimal supervision
  • High level of strategic thinking, personal initiative, and innovation
  • Ability to evaluate and solve communications needs quickly
  • Shows initiative and is highly organized and efficient, with outstanding attention to detail
  • Ability to anticipate project needs as situations and projects develop
  • Based in the Los Angeles area
  • Bilingual – English/Spanish (preferred)
